How it worksShow guide
Introduction
This speed test downloads and uploads real measurement data from your browser, then reports throughput, round-trip latency, and jitter. It measures the path between this device and the test endpoint — not a guaranteed ISP plan speed.
Step-by-step
- Start the test while this tab stays in the foreground
- Wait through ping, download, and upload phases
- Read Mbps, ping, jitter, and the workload estimates
Worked example
A typical run reports download and upload in Mbps, average ping in milliseconds, jitter from successive ping samples, and whether HD streaming or calls look feasible on this measurement.
Use cases
- Check whether a connection can handle HD or 4K streaming
- Compare ping and jitter before online gaming or video calls
- See how much a VPN or Wi-Fi hop is costing you versus a wired path
Frequently asked questions
What is internet speed?
Internet speed here means throughput: how many bits per second this browser can move to or from the test endpoint, reported in decimal megabits per second (Mbps).
How does an internet speed test work?
The tool times small requests for ping, then downloads and uploads incompressible payloads. Speed is (bytes × 8) ÷ elapsed seconds ÷ 1,000,000. Progress comes from real transfers, not a timer animation.
What is download speed?
Download speed is how fast data arrived from the test endpoint to this device during the download phase.
What is upload speed?
Upload speed is how fast this browser could send generated test bytes to a discard endpoint. It uses some of your data allowance; nothing personal is stored.
What is ping?
Ping is round-trip time for small requests, in milliseconds. Lower is more responsive for calls and games.
What is jitter?
Jitter is the average change between successive ping samples. High jitter makes real-time audio and games feel uneven even when average ping looks fine.
Why is my speed lower than my ISP plan?
Plans describe a best-case path to the ISP. This test measures this browser to a specific endpoint, including Wi-Fi, VPN, device limits, congestion, and TCP slow-start. It is a diagnostic, not a billing meter.
Does Wi-Fi affect speed-test results?
Yes. Interference, distance to the access point, and other devices on the network often cap results below a wired link.
Does a VPN affect speed?
Usually. Traffic is extra-encrypted and routed through the VPN server, which can add latency and reduce throughput.
How much data does a speed test use?
Adaptive testing typically transfers a few megabytes down and up, with caps around 12 MB download and 6 MB upload so a fast line is not asked to pull a huge file.
Can I run an internet speed test on mobile?
Yes. Use Wi-Fi or cellular as you prefer, and remember mobile networks vary by cell load. The layout is built for phones and desktops.
Can the speed test work offline?
The page can load from cache, but a real measurement needs a network. Offline, the tool explains that instead of inventing a result.
