Formula
When the amount excludes GST, tax is a percentage of the base. When the amount includes GST, tax is extracted using rate ÷ (100 + rate).
- A — Entered amount
- r — GST rate (%)
- GST — Tax component
Step-by-step
- Enter the amount.
- Enter the GST rate as a percent.
- Choose exclusive (amount before tax) or inclusive (amount already taxed).
- Review GST, net, and gross figures.
Worked example
On a $1,000 exclusive amount at 18% GST, tax is $180 and the gross total is $1,180.
Use cases
- Add GST to a quoted ex-tax price
- Find tax already included in a bill total
- Check invoices at common rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%)
